The house is situated on Pan de Azúcar Hill, in Graneros, 75 kilometers south of Santiago. Casa graneros is conceived as a place to rest for multiple families only at 45 minutes from the city. The construction is located on the slope, just over the ruins of an old house, which was completely burnt on a fire. The needs of a growing family, now with grandsons and their friends, required that the house had to be spatially generous.
The formal layout comes from the original construction levels, while attempting to not modify the hill conformation, which helps the new house to merge with the old garden. The construction is conceived to have non-converging slabs intersected with concrete and stone walls.
The materiality consists in exposed concrete (molded by rustic pine wood) and locally provided and carved stone. These natural elements helps the house to fit with surrounding olive trees and clay.
The layout is divided in three levels, with wide corridors, and generous common use spaces, providing informal family reunion. The first level contains independent apartments with a private garden for the elders of the family. On the second level, which corresponds the access, are the common areas: the kitchen, dinning room, and living area, and beside that, also the main bedroom with it´s own studio. All these rooms surround an inner patio, which still captures the presence of the hill. The third level corresponds to child’s rooms and their playing room. This level connects with the upper yard, the barbecue and a swimming pool terrace with an impressive view to the valley.
